A 17-year-old boy from Utah faces accusations of fatally shooting his mother and 8-year-old half-brother. Prosecutors point to a masked figure, resembling his build, spotted in the area after the shooting. Saratoga Springs police arrested the teen on August 14, following a 17-month investigation involving numerous search warrants, extensive forensic testing, and examination of hundreds of pieces of evidence.
The teen entered juvenile detention after authorities screened two first-degree murder charges with the Utah County Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors later charged him in juvenile court with two counts of aggravated murder and obstruction of justice, according to documents from KSL.
The state intends to request moving the case to adult district court. The teenager’s identity remains undisclosed as he is a juvenile.
Police arrived at the family home on Willowbrook Lane on March 28, 2025, responding to a medical-assist call. They found both 44-year-old Jessica Orton Lyman and Eli Painter, age 8, shot. Efforts to save them were unsuccessful.
Upon returning home the next morning, Lyman’s teenage daughter discovered the bodies, KSL reported. Surveillance from a nearby house allegedly caught an argument around 11:30 p.m. with voices of the accused teen and the victims. A woman, believed to be Lyman, shouted, “What are you doing?!” before three gunshots were heard.
Footage showed a masked figure resembling the teen’s build walking in the neighborhood between 2:34 a.m. and 2:59 a.m. March 28. Prosecutors said this figure’s mask and clothing matched items linked to the suspect. Investigators suspect the weapon may have been abandoned along the route, possibly near the Jordan River.
Dive teams from the FBI and Saratoga Springs police searched for evidence but found no firearms, except two BB guns in the teen’s room. Investigators reported gunshot residue on several items, plus his DNA under a victim’s fingernails and on Lyman’s shorts waistband.
“Most recently, examining new evidence and the comprehensive investigation over 17 months allowed identifying a suspect and establishing probable cause for an arrest,” stated Saratoga Springs Police Chief Andrew Burton.
Once a year passed since the crime, Lyman and Eli’s families publicly pleaded for answers. The Orton family shared, “Not a day has passed without feeling the weight of this loss. Our family is forever changed.” They urged anyone with additional information to step forward.
Following the arrest, the family acknowledged the agencies’ efforts but emphasized no legal action could replace their loss. They expect full accountability for the responsible party, mentioning Jessica Orton Lyman as a devoted mother who touched many lives, and Eli as a curious and loving child.
Family member Jason Painter stated, “They were so much more than the tragedy that took them. Their lives were filled with love, and they deserved many more years together.” The family commits to honoring their memories by remembering their love and legacies.
