Chicago Theater Updates: Robert Falls Returns, Broadway Openings and Shattered Globe’s New Season

Robert Falls’ Return to Chicago Theater

Acclaimed director Robert Falls is making his return to the Chicago theater scene, this time at the intimate Redtwist Theatre. This venue, located at 1044 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., seats fewer than 50 people. Falls expressed excitement about returning to the Chicago storefront theater scene. His upcoming project will follow his restaging of Mozart’s opera “Don Giovanni” at the Lyric Opera. The new show, titled “Flying Monkeys,” is a world premiere by L.C. Bernadine. It explores the “troubled teen” transportation industry where teens are often taken from their families unexpectedly. This production is scheduled to run from December 6, 2027, to January 17, 2028.

Falls described it as a “pop-up” production that fits between Redtwist’s previous plans. Bernadine is known for her work with the New Theatre Project, a growing company in Chicago. Falls is keen on supporting Bernadine’s work. The cast for “Flying Monkeys” hasn’t been announced yet; Redtwist being a non-Equity theater could provide opportunities for emerging actors to work with Falls.

Chicago Talent on Broadway

Bruce Norris’ play “Downstate” will soon play at Broadway’s Booth Theatre, directed by Joe Mantello and produced by Scott Rudin. This drama, known for its controversial themes, features Chicago actors Francis Guinan and K. Todd Freeman. Although this is a new production, it links back to its premiere at Steppenwolf in 2018.

Additionally, “Paranormal Activity” will open at Broadway’s August Wilson Theatre. This production, which appeared at Chicago Shakespeare Theater, involves several Chicago talents including DePaul graduate Levi Holloway. Cher Álvarez, Travis A. Knight, and Shannon Cochran are part of the cast. Kate Fry, part of the Chicago production, opted not to continue with the Broadway version.

Shattered Globe Theatre’s New Season

Shattered Globe Theatre has announced its 36th season with several exciting shows. The lineup includes the Midwest premiere of “Vladimir” by Erika Sheffer, directed by Lou Contey, featuring actors like Rebecca Jordan. The winter brings Phanésia Pharel’s “The Waterfall,” directed by Jasmine B. Gunter. Spring will feature “Brace Brace” by Oli Forsyth, directed by Elizabeth Margolius. Shattered Globe operates at Theater Wit on W. Belmont Ave.

Casting Updates

Lookingglass Theatre has announced the full cast for “Kowalski,” aiming for Broadway. Notable names include Johnny Galecki as Tennessee Williams and Jacob Moskovitz as Marlon Brando. Meanwhile, Nora Dunn has exited the cast of “The Humanities” at Victory Gardens Theater due to scheduling issues.

Remembering Kurt Ehrmann

The theater community mourns Kurt Ehrmann, who passed away at 58. Ehrmann was an actor known for his vibrant and deep performances in Chicago’s off-Loop theaters. His memorable roles include Roy Cohn in “Angels in America” and Hamm in “Endgame.” Ehrmann worked extensively with the Hypocrites and House Theatre of Chicago, consistently providing sophisticated and emotive performances.
