Darline Graham Wins South Carolina Senate Runoff

2 hours ago 0

Recent South Carolina runoff elections saw a surprising victory as Sen. Darline Graham, R-S.C., secured the Senate nomination. Endorsed by President Donald Trump, Graham emerged victorious over Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C. She succeeded her brother, the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, after his unexpected passing in July.

Despite minimal political experience before her appointment to complete her brother’s term, Graham won the trust of the electorate, aided by Trump’s endorsement. A little over a month after her brother’s death at 71, voters favored the Graham name, known in South Carolina politics.

Initially, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster’s appointment of Graham seemed temporary. However, Trump encouraged her to pursue the seat beyond the remaining five months. Expressing admiration, Trump stated, “Darline is somebody I’ve known for a long time. I asked her to do this. Everyone loves her. Everyone respects her.”

During her final debate with Norman, Graham faced criticism for her limited knowledge of Taiwan’s strategic importance. In response, Trump supported her with financial resources through his MAGA Inc., channeling over $800,000 into a phone campaign for her.

Graham emphasized her focus on domestic issues, in contrast with her brother’s approach. She made it clear that supporting her meant endorsing Trump’s agenda. Trump argued Graham was a more accomplishable choice, saying, “I’ve done more in 20 days than Ralph Norman has done in 20 years.”

Her campaign highlighted achievements like passing the bipartisan Russia sanctions package, a goal originally pursued by Lindsey Graham, but delayed by the White House. Additionally, Darline Graham cast a crucial vote for confirming President Trump’s attorney general, Todd Blanche.

Graham criticized Norman for opposing House Republican leadership and Trump at times. She stated, “We already have enough problem Democrats, we don’t need a problem Republican.” Her short time in the Senate revealed her eagerness to align with Trump’s policies while presenting herself as a domestic-focused candidate.
