Protests Erupt Over Alleged Police Misconduct in Oak Lawn

On Tuesday, nearly 100 individuals gathered outside the Oak Lawn Village Hall prior to the Village Board meeting. They claimed that police had mistreated a 14-year-old during an earlier Police and Fire Commission meeting.

The Oak Lawn police, in a statement, reported that the teenager used improper language during the public comment section of the August 5 meeting. They added that a woman obstructed officers as they tried to remove the boy from the podium.

Kobi Guillory, an activist and middle school teacher, spoke at the rally protesting the police’s treatment of the teen.

The incident has prompted regular appearances by organizers from the Arab American Action Network at Police and Fire Commission meetings since 2022. They protest what they describe as officer misconduct.

According to police, recent actions by activists have disrupted official proceedings. The police assert that these actions include shouting obscenities, physical confrontations, and refusal to comply with orders to maintain order.

Activists disputed this narrative in their address to the Village Board. They emphasized their concerns about racial issues within the Oak Lawn Police Department. They cited a previous case where an officer’s beating of a 17-year-old resulted in an $825,000 settlement by the village.

Muhammad Sankari, organizing director of the Arab American Action Network, criticized the police for using an unauthorized chokehold and highlighted the group’s ongoing commitment to demand accountability.
