Tragic Family Shooting in Montana

A man identified as Alan Smith killed eight relatives, including four children, during a Sunday dinner in a home near Billings, Montana. Following the attack, Smith died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities confirmed.

Details of the Incident

Alan Smith, 44, was reportedly asked to move out by his parents but returned on Sunday and opened fire. Brad Ireland, whose former wife and two children were among the victims, provided these details.

“Smith killed his grandmother, his parents, his younger sister, and the four children before setting the house ablaze,” said Ireland.

Law enforcement confronted Smith after he attempted to flee. Police arrived on the scene Sunday evening, hearing gunshots as the house became engulfed in flames.

Victims and Family Background

The victims spanned four generations of a blended family, including a seven-year-old girl and a great-grandmother in her 90s who used a wheelchair. Ireland’s ex-wife, Megan Ghekiere, and their two children, Owen, 13, and Chloe, 7, were killed. Two of Ghekiere’s stepchildren with her current husband, Landon Ghekiere, 15, and Charlotte Ghekiere, 12, also died.

Originally from Seattle, after their divorce six years ago, Megan relocated to Montana, where she met her second husband, Adam Ghekiere. Her parents, Dana and Barb Smith, purchased a house nearby, while Evelyn Smith, Dana’s elderly mother, resided in a local retirement community.

Adam Ghekiere was at work when the incident occurred. Upon hearing about the shooting through a dispatch radio, he rushed to the scene, finding the house engulfed in flames.

“I don’t think he expected my kids to be there,” Ghekiere said of his brother-in-law. “Monster isn’t even enough to describe what he did.”

Community Support and Fundraisers

Two GoFundMe pages have been established to aid Adam Ghekiere and his ex-wife, Erica Schneider. As of early Wednesday, donations have reached over $60,000 to cover memorial and funeral expenses for the children. Another page for Adam Ghekiere has collected over $90,000, organized by Michael Solberg.

Fundraising efforts highlight the community’s loss, describing Landon as a caring young man eager to get his driver’s license and Charlotte as a precocious child with an angelic smile.

Support is intended to cover funeral costs, counseling, time off work, and other unforeseen expenses resulting from the tragedy.

Adam Ghekiere mentioned Charlotte had dialed 911 from inside the house. Ghekiere shared her words with sorrow, “I keep hearing her quote to me every time I would say ‘I love you’ and she would say ‘I love you more.’”
