Kevion Moton’s Impactful Presence Elevates Waukegan Bulldogs

Waukegan High School’s Kevion Moton stands out as a critical player for the Bulldogs, demonstrating commitment beyond necessity. A two-way cornerstone, Moton leads the charge in rebuilding a team that struggled to gain traction in previous seasons. His actions speak volumes about his dedication to improvement.

“I am not a big talker, but I want my actions to show others how to do things correctly,” Moton stated, emphasizing his focus on leading by example. His offseason efforts have begun to influence his teammates, setting the stage for a stronger season.

The roster’s expansion under first-year coach Darrell Thomas, growing to over 40 players, adds potential for progress. Despite a season opener loss of 41-12 to Niles North, Moton remains optimistic about upcoming matches. “This year we’ve come together as a team, and a lot of people have stepped up in coming to practice,” Moton said. The increase in participation promises to bolster the team’s competitiveness.

Waukegan aims to end their long-standing losing streak, seeking multiple wins and serious competition to challenge opponents. “I would really want two or three wins and at least compete with teams,” expressed Moton, aspiring for more engagement from other teams.

Moton’s performance in the season’s first game was remarkable, accounting for three tackles and helping the Bulldogs achieve 213 rushing yards. His transition from linebacker to defensive end has enhanced his effectiveness on the field, taking advantage of his 6-foot-3, 230-pound build.

Coach Thomas acknowledges Moton’s contribution over his four years with the team. “He had one of our best percentages for being at offseason workouts and in the weight room,” Thomas noted. Moton’s adaptability and dedication solidify his role in the team’s hopes for turnaround.

His offseason training, focused on speed and endurance, included a speed class with Zion-Benton track coach Darnell Rios. “I definitely noticed a difference (in the opener),” Moton said, experiencing improved agility and quickness.

His influence extends to his teammates, as observed by senior middle linebacker Jeremiah Hood. “You can see him always trying to motivate others to get to practice,” Hood remarked, highlighting Moton’s leadership and supportive nature.

Moton cherishes the camaraderie and excitement of playing alongside lifelong friends, saying, “There’s no feeling in the world that’s better than being out there with the people I’ve grown up playing with.” His dedication and passion for the game continue to inspire those around him.
