Texas Senate Race: Talarico Faces Intra-Party Challenges

Texas Democratic Senate hopeful Representative James Talarico is dealing with challenges both within his party and from his Republican opponent. While Talarico competes against Attorney General Ken Paxton, he faces reluctance from former rival Jasmine Crockett to support his campaign. Crockett, the congresswoman he defeated in the Democratic primary, told CNN she won’t join Talarico on the campaign trail. This isn’t new, as Crockett previously withheld full endorsement of Talarico, whom polls and experts suggest as the Democrats’ prime chance to challenge the Republican dominance in Texas.

After losing the primary, Crockett congratulated Talarico but focused on party unity more than personal support. She cited Beto O’Rourke’s 2018 Senate race against Ted Cruz, where O’Rourke lost by a slim margin, as a strategy she wishes to avoid. Her approach emphasizes increasing attention to down-ballot candidates rather than highlighting one high-profile candidate.

Crockett claims Black voters aren’t particularly excited about Talarico’s bid but expect them to vote Democrat irrespective of their enthusiasm due to Republican targeting of Black lives. A TSU poll confirms 79% of likely Black voters plan to support Talarico against 12% favoring Paxton, with Crockett’s primary loss having minimal impact on voter motivation.

In July, Talarico acknowledged Crockett’s endorsement as challenging and appreciated her down-ballot efforts. He urged unity among supporters to reduce intra-party division. He would welcome Crockett’s presence in his campaign, recognizing her as a skilled campaigner.

Previously in February, Talarico’s criticism of Colin Allred stirred controversy, which he clarified was about campaign methods, not race. Texas remains pivotal in the midterms, with Talarico slightly leading Paxton in recent TPOR polls. Democrats aim to shift the balance in the upper chamber, and analysts are split on the state’s political leanings.
