UCLA Appoints Tim Harris as New Athletic Director amidst Financial Challenges

In a recent decision, UCLA has dismissed its athletic director Martin Jarmond, making way for Tim Harris, the former head of business operations for the Los Angeles Lakers. This change was communicated by Chancellor Julio Frenk, highlighting the university’s intent to pursue a new direction for its athletics.

Jarmond, who held the position for six years, leaves immediately following a period where the Bruins secured three NCAA championships, including the women’s basketball team’s first title. Harris, aged 64, assumes the role as CEO and athletic director on a voluntary basis, as Frenk elaborated in his communication.

Harris, a UCLA alumnus with a degree in sociology achieved in 1989, was previously involved with the men’s soccer team as a goalkeeper. His extensive tenure of over 35 years with the Lakers concluded in February, succeeding the sale of the team to Mark Walter, owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Jarmond, aged 46, had succeeded Dan Guerrero as AD in 2020, securing a contract extension until 2024. However, the athletic department under Jarmond experienced continuous financial shortfalls, amassing $241 million over seven years, despite UCLA joining the Big Ten Conference and gaining significant media rights income.

The fiscal deficit, narrowing to $21.6 million in 2025, prompted multiple financial rescues by the university. Frenk emphasized the unsustainable financial trajectory as a key factor for Jarmond’s release.

Frenk articulated the need to adopt an athletics model that not only adapts but leads, noting the swift evolution in college sports influenced by name, image, and likeness agreements allowing athlete earnings.

As part of his final projects, Jarmond appointed Bob Chesney from James Madison University to rejuvenate UCLA’s football program. The team faces off with California in the upcoming season opener.
