House Republicans Target Democrats with Resolutions on Socialism

House Republicans are advancing legislation to challenge Democrats on their stance regarding socialism. The House Rules Committee moved forward with a resolution condemning socialism, despite criticism from Democratic members who see it as a waste of time.

Rep. Jim McGovern, a Democrat from Massachusetts, dismissed the bill as ineffective in addressing Americans’ concerns over rising gas and grocery prices, arguing that Republicans are prioritizing non-binding resolutions.

Don’t worry. Republicans in Congress are passing another non-binding resolution condemning socialism.

The debate intensified when Rep. Joe Neguse from Colorado engaged with Committee Chairman Bryan Steil from Wisconsin over socialism’s definition. Neguse questioned if a hypothetical scenario involving President Trump acquiring a stake in grocery stores qualified as socialism. Steil responded by emphasizing the need for more details and a national security rationale in such cases.

Further exchanges saw Rules Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx reprimand Neguse for interruptions during Steil’s responses. Steil argued against government ownership of grocery stores and reiterated the necessity for a national security justification.

A House-wide rule vote on the resolution is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, followed by a vote on the resolution itself. Republicans plan another measure, a constitutional amendment limiting Supreme Court justices to nine, to be voted on Wednesday.

Several progressives, including Senators Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris, advocate expanding the Supreme Court. House GOP leaders fast-tracked the legislation, requiring a two-thirds chamber vote.

Rep. Lisa McClain from Michigan challenged Democrats to openly state their position on packing the Supreme Court and socialism.

Do you want to pack the Supreme Court or not? It’s really simple. It’s a yes or no vote. It’s no bigger than that.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries declined to comment on the resolution, criticizing the SAVE America Act for potentially suppressing votes.

The resolution also promotes Republican election security bills like proof of citizenship and photo identification. Democrats view these measures as voter suppression attempts, with Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon calling them efforts to silence political opponents.

Rep. Nick Langworthy from New York highlighted socialism’s rise in his state and cautioned about its national spread.
