Altering Political Paths: Millennials in Politics

55 minutes ago 0

Charlotte Alter, a well-known journalist and author, reacted with surprise when Representative Haley Stevens, a Democrat from Michigan, announced her endorsement of Mike Rogers, a Republican, for a U.S. Senate seat. Alter stated that Stevens, known for her loyalty to the Democratic party, seemed to jeopardize her political career in one decision. Alter wrote on X that it was ‘wild to watch a political career implode’ so dramatically.

Stevens’ endorsement was labeled ‘despicable’ by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, while former President Donald Trump considered it brave. Alter, author of the book The Ones We’ve Been Waiting For, shared her insights on rising millennial political figures. The book aimed to showcase a potential shift in political power from an older generation to millennials.

Alter’s book profiled several political figures, including Stevens, Pete Buttigieg, and Elise Stefanik. The book highlighted the diverse trajectories millennials face in politics. Six years later, their political careers have evolved in various ways, with some achieving national recognition, while others faced challenges or left politics altogether.

Changing Political Fortunes

Stevens’ shift in political allegiance is notable. Previously part of the Democrats’ 2018 House class, she sought a Senate seat following her narrow loss in the Democratic primary. Unexpectedly, she endorsed Rogers amid a growing conflict over Israel and her political alliances, which included Abdul El-Sayed.

Two Republican profiles from Alter’s book also experienced changes. Dan Crenshaw, former Navy SEAL, entered Congress in 2019. Yet, he lost his primary to Steve Toth after not securing Trump’s endorsement. In contrast, Elise Stefanik shifted from moderate to one of Trump’s key congressional supporters. After several attempts at higher political positions, she decided against seeking another House term.

Ascending Figures

Pete Buttigieg, featured in the book, moved on from a presidential campaign to serve as President Biden’s transportation secretary. He remains a prominent national figure and might consider a 2028 presidential run. Similarly, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, once an insurgent, has become a significant Democratic presence with speculation about a future presidential bid.

Lauren Underwood, though less publicized, has held significant roles since becoming the youngest Black woman in Congress. She now contributes as a House Appropriations Committee member and co-chair of the House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee.

Shifting Influence

Eric Lesser was a state senator in Massachusetts and ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor in 2022. He transitioned to a role as senior counsel in a law firm. Max Rose, another subject, shifted from Congress to working with veteran and AI-backed political groups.

Braxton Winston and Svante Myrick explored alternative political paths. Winston, initially a city councilman, became mayor pro tem and is involved in state labor leadership. Myrick transitioned from being Ithaca’s mayor to leading a progressive organization.

A Scattered Generation

Alter’s book reflects the uncertainty in political trajectories amidst massive changes over the past six years, including the COVID-19 pandemic, elections, and shifts within major political parties. While some millennials rose in traditional political roles, others reshaped their paths to find influence differently.

Stevens’ unexpected political move highlights the varied and often unpredictable nature of political careers. As these millennials navigate evolving political landscapes, they represent a generation disrupted and moving in diverse directions.
