The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have detained the head of Hamas’ general security during a military operation in Gaza. Israel’s Defense Minister, Israel Katz, confirmed the capture, identifying the Hamas leader as Mu’in al-Arabid. This operation was part of an Israeli penetration into Hamas-controlled areas in Gaza.
To support the operation’s exit strategy, the IDF conducted airstrikes. Defense Minister Katz stated, “A senior Hamas terrorist was arrested recently. Our approach is proactive; we target Hamas terrorists, disrupt their operations, and dismantle their infrastructure. We’ve established a robust security zone in Gaza to safeguard both residents and IDF personnel.”
Recently, Katz noted, “Almost 70% of the Gaza Strip lies in ruins, devoid of residents, tunnels, and homes, with the IDF maintaining control. Our presence will continue until Gaza is demilitarized, Hamas disarmed, and all terrorist tunnels are removed. Post-demilitarization, the IDF will station along defensive perimeters to secure the western Negev communities. We will respond firmly to any attempts to breach the security zone via aerial attacks.”
The Israeli action aligns with previous calls from former U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, which, in August, urged Hamas to disarm and relinquish control of Gaza. Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, visited Israel recently, suggesting possible U.S. support for IDF operations to “finish the job.”
Kushner also met directly with Hamas in Egypt, marking only his second known encounter with the group. He stated, “While they expressed willingness to cooperate, trusting an organization with a violent history is challenging. We had a productive dialogue, and they seemed cooperative, so we will allow them a chance to act.”
The U.S.-led “Board of Peace” initiative focuses on a phased approach, including ceasefire, demilitarization of Gaza, withdrawal of Israeli troops, establishment of Palestinian governance, and global rebuilding efforts.
