New York Gov. Hochul Criticizes Federal Delay on Counterterrorism Funding

As the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks approaches, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has accused the Department of Homeland Security under President Donald Trump of withholding crucial funds from New York State. She claims that the agency is holding back 40% of the state’s counterterrorism funding.

During a press conference, Gov. Hochul announced that this 40% amounts to $87 million. “The Department of Homeland Security, created in response to 9/11, is withholding New York’s anticipated funds,” she stated.

Hochul, a Democrat, further criticized the president for allegedly “defunding the police” and compromising public safety to retaliate politically against a blue state.

“Don’t play political games with people’s lives. Release the $87 million you owe us,” Hochul urged, addressing the president directly.

She elaborated that failing to release these funds would betray the families affected by 9/11, endanger police officers and firefighters doing their daily duties, and damage New Yorkers’ trust in federal protection.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani also commented on the situation, calling the federal government’s refusal to release the $87 million “unacceptable.” He stressed the need for this funding to support 12 bomb squads, ensure FDNY’s communication during emergencies, and train first responders for radiological threats.

Former and current city officials have joined the call for releasing the funds, arguing that New York City should not bear this burden alone. The funds are deemed essential for maintaining public safety in the nation’s largest city.
