Thai authorities have detained dozens of individuals suspected of being involved in prostitution as part of a significant crackdown in Pattaya, a well-known tourist destination. This operation took place ahead of the expected arrival of approximately 5,000 U.S. sailors and Marines.
Police raids over the weekend resulted in the detention of between 40 and 50 people, as reported by Reuters and local media in Pattaya. The USS Abraham Lincoln reached the eastern shores of Thailand, concluding a lengthy at-sea deployment. Concerns about deteriorating conditions and mental health issues aboard the ship had previously led U.S. lawmakers to call for an investigation.
The aircraft carrier endured more than 200 days without docking after being redirected from the South China Sea to the Middle East earlier this year, supporting the U.S. conflict with Iran which initiated shortly thereafter. The sailors and Marines will remain in Thailand for four days before proceeding to the carrier’s home port of San Diego.
Pattaya is infamous for its vibrant nightlife and visible sex tourism, despite laws against prostitution in Thailand. Advocacy groups and officials admit that the practice is not always fully regulated and can be challenging for law enforcement to detect.
“We are doing our best, but it is difficult,” stated Pattaya police chief Anek Srathongyoo.
