The Tunnel to Towers Foundation is commemorating the 25th anniversary of September 11 by transporting a 21-foot steel beam from the World Trade Center’s South Tower across America. The tour aims to educate younger generations about the 9/11 tragedy.
Tunnel to Towers founder and CEO, Frank Siller, has shared insights on the emotional reactions people have when touching the 17,000-pound beam during the memorial tour.
Steel Across America Tour
The Steel Across America tour began earlier this year. It honors the 25th anniversary of 9/11 and celebrates American service members and first responders. The steel stops are scheduled in Massachusetts, Washington, D.C., and New York City through September 11.
The beam will be displayed at significant locations. On Wednesday, it will be at the Boston Red Sox vs. Seattle Mariners game at Fenway Park, followed by the Massachusetts Fallen Heroes Memorial on Thursday.
The steel beam serves as a vivid reminder of the courage shown by first responders and service members.
Upcoming Events
The beam will be featured at a private event in Washington, D.C., on Friday, before heading to another event in Brooklyn, New York City on September 11. Its final tour stop will be at the New York Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys game at MetLife Stadium on September 13. Recently, the beam visited the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
Superintendent Lt. Gen. James B. Bartholomees III highlighted the connection between the bravery of first responders on 9/11 and the service of Americans in the subsequent years.
Honoring Legacy of Service
Ceremonial events at West Point included a color guard, pipe and drum procession by members of the NYPD, FDNY, and Port Authority Police Department, along with the national anthem and a blessing of the steel. There was a moment of reflection accompanied by “Amazing Grace.”
Frank Siller recalled the actions of his brother, FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller, who ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel with gear to help those in need. Frank emphasized the enduring values of duty, honor, and country.
The tour serves as a commitment to ensure the sacrifices made on 9/11 are always remembered.
