Police have initiated a death investigation after a woman from Gage Park passed away in a Chicago hospital. Maria Delgado, aged 54, succumbed to her injuries more than a week after experiencing a fall and an alleged domestic battery on the same evening.
Delgado had been hospitalized since October 9, following a fall at an unspecified event she attended. During her ride to the hospital, she and a 58-year-old man reportedly argued over the fall. The man then allegedly struck her across the face in the 3900 block of West 58th Street within the West Elsdon neighborhood, as reported by Chicago police.
The man was detained at the hospital and subsequently charged with one misdemeanor count of domestic battery, according to the police. Delgado died on Saturday afternoon at Stroger Hospital, per the police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office records.
On Tuesday, the medical examiner’s office noted that Delgado’s cause of death remains pending, awaiting the results of the ongoing police investigation and further studies. Police have stated that detectives from the Wentworth Area are actively investigating the case.
