Sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln are enjoying a reprieve from their military duties as they land in Thailand, taking a break on the beaches and visiting local bars. These sailors, along with Marines and crew, have endured a grueling nine-month deployment at sea, which included six months of active involvement in conflict with Iran.
Christi McGarey, mother of sailor Marshall Ludwig, expressed her relief to CBS News about her son finally setting foot on land. ‘I’m certain that his feet have touched the ground, and I’m really so relieved, so relieved,’ she stated. This deployment was marked by record consecutive days at sea, never before experienced by this specific vessel.
During this period, the crew dealt with challenging conditions due to depleted supplies because of strikes on U.S. bases in the region by Iran. These conditions have contributed to a noticeable impact on mental well-being among those on board.
While in Thailand, CBS News attempted to interview several sailors regarding conditions on the ship, but each preferred not to comment on the situation. Despite this, they all conveyed enthusiasm about being back on firm ground.
McGarey mentioned her son considers concerns about the conditions to be exaggerated, adding, ‘I don’t know if he was trying to make mom feel better. He said he knew about one person that had jumped overboard, but that that was all that he was aware of.’ A sailor did indeed go overboard in August, an incident under investigation by the Navy.
Jefferson Kelley, father of sailor Jackson Kelley, expressed his disapproval of prolonged deployments, stressing the demanding maintenance and operation of these older vessels not equipped with state-of-the-art features.
Communication with loved ones has been scarce due to the intense operations around Iran. McGarey reflected on her son’s deployment, noting, ‘They just set off on regular deployment, no idea that a war would break out in the area they were in.’
The USS Lincoln’s crew will soon journey back to their home port in San Diego, following their respite in Thailand. Their position in the Middle East now transferred to the USS George Washington carrier group.
