USS Abraham Lincoln Sailors Visit Pattaya Amid Deployment Break

Recent videos and images on social media depict a large number of U.S. sailors arriving in Pattaya, Thailand, after spending 286 days at sea aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. The city, often dubbed Thailand’s “Sin City,” was a leisure stop during their deployment. Earlier concerns about food shortages and mental health issues during this lengthy mission were dismissed by former President Donald Trump.

The USS Abraham Lincoln carrier group, involved in operations related to the U.S. naval blockade during the Iran conflict, docked in Chon Buri for a five-day rest. Additionally, the USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. and the USS Robert Smalls made port calls at Sriracha and Map Ta Phut, respectively.

City officials in Pattaya met with U.S. Navy representatives to discuss conduct guidelines for service members. Although Pattaya is known for sex tourism, recent efforts have rebranded it into a family-friendly destination featuring golf courses, shopping malls, and various outdoor activities.

The USS Lincoln’s command has emphasized strict adherence to behavior standards. Personnel were warned about penalties for involvement in prostitution, as outlined in Article 134 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Banners and signs around the city welcomed U.S. personnel warmly. Many sailors began exploring Pattaya, particularly the well-known Walking Street. Additional transportation, including chartered vehicles, was arranged from Laem Chabang, where the USS Lincoln is docked.

Social media reactions to the sailors’ presence included observations about their appearances and actions. One Instagram video showed sailors exploring local areas, sparking discussions about their attire and demeanor. A TikTok video, liked over 2,000 times, showed a serviceman energetically dancing in a nightclub, receiving empathic comments from viewers.

Another TikTok video captured the influx of U.S. personnel into a local bar, with users noting the lively atmosphere in Pattaya and the economic benefits of the visit. Other images captured sailors enjoying downtime at a swimming pool and relaxing in uniform. The arrival of about 5,000 personnel is expected to boost the local economy.

Despite the positive reception, a minor incident occurred when two U.S. service members were involved in a fight near Walking Street. Pattaya police handled the situation, and the individuals were returned to the carrier for the remainder of their visit.

The U.S. military has a historical connection with Pattaya, dating back to the Vietnam War era when thousands of American service members were stationed in Thailand. The city’s proximity to military bases like Sattahip and the U-Tapao airfield, which hosted U.S. Air Force B-52 bombers, underscores this long-standing relationship.
