Netflix is expanding its sports coverage, echoing the approach of major sports networks. They recently brought in former ESPN anchor Elle Duncan as their primary on-air sports personality. In addition, Netflix signed The Pivot Podcast, hosted by Ryan Clark, to a multi-year contract. This shift raises questions about how it aligns with traditional sports audiences.

Dan Dakich, from Don’t @ Me, critiques this move. He suggests that Netflix’s focus might alienate core sports fans by emphasizing narratives perceived as victim-centered.

Michigan’s Narrow Escape in Football

The Michigan Wolverines nearly faced an upset similar to their 2007 loss against Appalachian State. Their first game of the season against the Western Michigan Broncos was more challenging than expected. Although Michigan was favored by 27.5 points with an expected high-scoring game, it became a low-scoring defensive match.

Quarterback Bryce Underwood initiated the score with a one-yard run. The Broncos responded with two field goals by halftime, bringing the score to 7-6 in Michigan’s favor. Western Michigan then took the lead in the fourth quarter with another field goal.

Final Minutes and Controversial Finish

As the game neared its conclusion, Michigan appeared poised to make a comeback. Yet, Western Michigan’s defense forced a fumble from Underwood, securing the ball. Despite a scare from their own fumble, the Broncos added another field goal, leading 12-7.

In a dramatic final play, Underwood found a receiving target at midfield. Scrambling to spike the ball, Michigan managed one last play with only a second left. Underwood connected with JJ Buchanan for a touchdown, clinching a 13-12 victory. The call was controversial and will certainly be debated.

Underwood completed the game with 170 passing yards, 46 rushing yards, and a rushing touchdown. This win marks the beginning of the Kyle Whittingham era for Michigan. The matchup against the No. 10 Oklahoma Sooners on September 12 will provide another challenge.
