Supporters of Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) celebrated after exit polls revealed the party had won the most votes in the Saxony-Anhalt state election. Held on Sunday, September 6, 2026, the election saw AfD leading in the eastern German state according to early results.
Exit polls from German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF indicate that AfD achieved between 44.1% and 44.5% of the vote, surpassing Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) which garnered approximately 18.5%. In comparison, AfD had secured 20.8% in the previous regional election in 2021, demonstrating significant growth. If these projections stand, the CDU’s voter share is practically halved, while AfD’s doubled.
This potential win for AfD marks a historical moment. It would be the first instance of a far-right party gaining control of a German state’s government in postwar history. Notably, AfD is classified as right-wing extremist by Germany’s domestic intelligence authorities. Leaders of the party express confidence about its expanding influence beyond just eastern Germany; nationwide, the party is also polling strongly.
AfD federal leader Alice Weidel shared her perspective with broadcaster ZDF, emphasizing the broader implications of Saxony-Anhalt’s potential outcome. She stated, “We are witnessing explosive growth in Saxony-Anhalt, and this trend will spread throughout East Germany and reach the federal level.”
Central to AfD’s success in Saxony-Anhalt is top candidate Ulrich Siegmund, a 35-year-old former marketing professional. Known for his approachable demeanor but advocating radical policies, Siegmund is distinguished by his neat attire and consistent smile. Despite his amiable appearance, Siegmund’s platform includes stringent immigration policies and promoting mass deportations.
Siegmund’s campaign has also advocated for reforms in migration and education and proposed revisions of the region’s public broadcaster. Further, AfD supports fostering closer relations with Russia and aligning with the MAGA movement in the United States.
After the announcement of the results, Siegmund commented, “We have written history.” He also acknowledged Chancellor Merz’s influence, noting, “He was a very good campaigner for us.”
