Steve Witkoff’s recent diplomatic mission in Moscow attracted significant attention. Meeting with Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin, Witkoff, along with Jared Kushner, expressed gratitude to the Russian president for hosting them. Witkoff mentioned the memoirs these meetings would create, highlighting Putin’s role in them.

Negotiations and Current Situation

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has led to mass casualties, widespread displacement, and extensive destruction in Ukraine, with reconstruction costs estimated at $588 billion. Efforts in diplomacy remain pivotal. Zelensky confirmed that numerous Ukrainian firms are developing air defense systems. Nevertheless, he emphasizes diplomacy as “Plan A” to de-escalate tensions, relying on Witkoff and Kushner as key facilitators.

Challenges of Negotiations

Despite Witkoff’s diplomacy, Russia remains firm on its conditions. Yuri Ushakov, Putin’s aide, reaffirmed Russia’s goals remain unchanged. He outlined demands, including Ukraine relinquishing regions, maintaining neutrality, excluding NATO, and recognizing Russian annexations. Putin’s advances in combat zones further embolden his stance.

Kushner addressed the constraint of working as intermediaries, suggesting that direct trilateral talks could be more effective. Witkoff’s frequent visits signal continuous diplomatic attempts to ease hostilities.

While swift resolution appears unlikely, Witkoff and Kushner’s visits contribute to temporary ceasefires. Zelensky expects continued conflict into winter. Creating precedents with these pauses may facilitate future diplomatic strategies.
