Both SpaceX and Tesla are headquartered in Texas. It’s becoming increasingly costly for Elon Musk following recent election results. Shares in Tesla and SpaceX experienced a notable drop of over 4% premarket on Wednesday after Democrats achieved a series of midterm victories in Texas, the base for both companies.
The Texas election results included James Talarico defeating Republican nominee Ken Paxton for a Senate seat and Democratic candidate Gina Hinojosa unseating long-term governor Greg Abbott. These results pose challenges for Musk, who invested approximately $224 million supporting Republican candidates in Texas. This amount includes $158 million spent in September alone, as reported by The New York Times.
If SpaceX and Tesla shares maintain their decline as markets open, the companies could potentially suffer a collective loss exceeding $140 billion in market value. Musk, who relocated SpaceX’s headquarters from California in 2024 citing dissatisfaction with state legislation, now faces the situation where his public companies might once again be regulated by Democratic officials.
Texas hosts Tesla’s Austin gigafactory, and the company has established its robotaxi service in various cities across the state. SpaceX, on the other hand, conducts its Starship rocket launches from its Starbase facility in Boca Chica, near the Mexican border.
Dan Ives, an analyst at Wedbush, expressed optimism for SpaceX and Tesla, indicating in a Wednesday note that Musk needs to navigate the newly Democrat-led Texas administration following the Senate and Governor races.
Musk contributed at least $446 million to Republican figures and organizations leading up to the election. He clashed with Talarico, who criticized Musk in his victory speech on Wednesday. In response to widespread Democratic successes in the midterm elections, Musk suggested on social media that SpaceX’s initiative to establish data centers in space seemed appealing.
Musk humorously remarked, “Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn’t work this time.”
