Neuqua Valley’s Will Kalish Aims for Greatness

Aspiring Receiver Inspired by Past Greats

Neuqua Valley junior receiver Will Kalish is motivated by a vision of success. Although he never saw Mike Dudek play live, he has watched highlights of Dudek’s impressive high school career online. Dudek graduated in 2014 after setting records at Neuqua Valley and went on to play college football at Illinois.

“He’s one of my biggest idols,” Kalish said. “I compare myself to him as much as possible.”

Early Success Amid Challenges

Kalish is in his second varsity season and is determined to make his mark. Last year, he had limited opportunities due to a senior-heavy team but stood out in a game against Homewood-Flossmoor with two touchdowns.

At 6-foot and 160 pounds, Kalish seeks to leverage his potential and has already shown promise this season. In a loss to Oswego, he recorded seven receptions for 167 yards and three touchdowns. He followed up with another strong performance against Minooka.

“For sure it’s a breakout year,” said senior quarterback Drake Mennecke. “His route running is really good.”

Preparation and Drive

Kalish credits his offseason preparation for his strong start. He and Mennecke trained together intensely, focusing on building their on-field connection.

“It all starts in the offseason, but the season is when it really starts,” Kalish said.

Facing Defensive Challenges

Kalish’s early success means defenses are now more focused on neutralizing him. In a recent game against Hersey, he faced double coverage, resulting in limited gains.

“It’s definitely annoying having a little target on my back, but it’s also a privilege,” he remarked.

Support from Team and Coach

Despite challenges, Kalish remains upbeat and continues to work hard with his team. Coach Bill Ellinghaus recognizes Kalish’s talent and the threat he poses to opponents.

“Will is really, really good,” Ellinghaus said. “He’s a great threat on offense.”

Kalish’s teammate Joshua Repmann, who plays receiver and tight end, admires his work ethic. Kalish is known for his commitment and leadership in the locker room.

“This kid, he works hard every day,” Repmann said.

Looking Forward

Kalish, who also participates in basketball and track, is determined to overcome recent setbacks. He remains focused on growth and improvement as more teams take notice of his talent.

“I really wanted more for myself,” Kalish said. “But it’s just going to go up from here.”
