New Hampshire Senate Primaries Spark Political Battles

The New Hampshire Senate primaries have commenced with polls closing as candidates from both major parties vie for nominations. This election holds significance as it may influence if Republicans retain Senate control in the upcoming midterms.

Democratic Senate Primary

Karishma Manzur, aligned with socialist ideology, seeks to upset four-term Rep. Chris Pappas in the Democratic Senate primary. Though initially not expected to win, Manzur gained attention as New Hampshire’s primaries become a focal point in the national arena. This aligns with a broader trend where progressive candidates have triumphed over centrists within the Democratic Party.

The winner will face either John E. Sununu or Scott Brown, past senators contesting for the Republican Senate nomination. They aim to succeed outgoing Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, noted as the first woman in the U.S. to hold both gubernatorial and senatorial positions.

Pappas, with strong establishment backing, is portrayed as part of a political system favoring the wealthy. Conversely, Manzur, a scientist and new political entrant, campaigns on universal healthcare, a $20 minimum wage, abolishing ICE, and ending military support to Israel, citing human rights concerns in the Gaza conflict.

Both candidates express differing views on U.S.-Israel relations and domestic policies, reflecting broader ideological divides within the Democratic Party.

Republican Senate Primary

Republicans are locked in their own battle reflecting former President Trump’s influence. Trump endorsed Sununu, a GOP critic, over Brown, a former ambassador. Sununu carries support from party leaders like Senate Majority Leader John Thune.

Brown criticizes Sununu’s affiliations, questioning his independence and dedication to New Hampshire constituents. Meanwhile, Sununu emphasizes his commitment to state issues and claims not to rely on external campaign support.

Other Political Contests

The race to replace Rep. Pappas in the 1st Congressional District features Shaheen’s daughter Stefany Shaheen against Obama-era Defense official Maura Sullivan. Progressive Carleigh Beriont emerges as a late challenger.

In the GOP primary, Anthony DiLorenzo, supported by Trump, and businesswoman Hollie Noveletsky lead, with state Rep. Brian Cole also in contention. In the 2nd Congressional District, Rep. Maggie Goodlander faces a primary challenge from Paige Beauchemin, with Lily Tang Williams as the Republican frontrunner.

Gubernatorial Race

Republican Gov. Kelly Ayotte runs for re-election unopposed within her party, while Cinde Warmington is set for the Democratic nomination.
