Federal Judge Dismisses Trump Administration’s Attempt to Block Senate Race Certification in Alaska

1 hour ago 0

President Trump attended a campaign rally on October 13 in Wasilla, Alaska, where Republican Senator Dan Sullivan, who is running for reelection, delivered a speech. Meanwhile, a federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit brought by the Trump administration aiming to prevent the certification of results from a key U.S. Senate race in Alaska if the Republican incumbent loses.

U.S. District Judge Sharon Gleason ruled on Sunday that the federal government lacks the authority to file this lawsuit. Judge Gleason, appointed during former President Barack Obama’s administration, challenged the Justice Department attorneys who referenced the preamble of the National Voter Registration Act in their claims. An appeal of Gleason’s ruling is expected.

President Trump asserted that he initiated the lawsuit due to confusion over two Senate candidates on Alaska’s ballot having similar names: Sen. Dan Sullivan, the Republican incumbent, and Daniel Sullivan Jr., an unaffiliated candidate. Previously, the Alaska Republican Party sought a state court intervention to remove Sullivan Jr. from the ballot, but the Alaska Supreme Court decided in June that Sullivan Jr. could legally run.

Accusations from Republicans suggest Democrats are supporting Sullivan Jr. to hinder the incumbent’s reelection prospects. A report from the New York Times highlighted efforts by Democratic campaign operatives to recruit Sullivan Jr., though this information has not been confirmed by NPR. The allegations have intensified scrutiny of this Senate race.

Alaska’s Republican Governor Mike Dunleavy has commenced an investigation into the situation and stated that the race’s results might not be certified based on the investigation’s findings. Gov. Dunleavy remarked, “If we find out there’s wrongdoing, and if that means that the certification then is stopped or changed, then that’s what happens.” He shared these comments in an interview with NewsNation on Friday.

During a press conference in Anchorage, U.S. Attorney Michael Heyman confirmed an ongoing criminal investigation by the Justice Department regarding the allegations. Democratic candidate, former Representative Mary Peltola, has rejected any claims of involvement.
