GOP Gathers in Dallas for Historic Midterm Convention

The stakes are high as President Donald Trump and the Republicans head into the midterm elections, with early voting fast approaching. The GOP is holding its first midterm convention in Dallas, hoping to energize its base and boost turnout in critical races to maintain control of Congress.

Republican National Committee Chair Joe Gruters highlighted the importance of the convention, stating, “We are putting the president on the ballot.” The event aims to address the challenge of low turnout among MAGA voters when Trump is not on the ballot. To counter this, the GOP is hosting what they call “Trumpapalooza,” featuring Trump as the main attraction.

According to the schedule, Trump will deliver the keynote address on both nights. On Wednesday, he will speak at 9 p.m. ET and will return Thursday to close the convention after Vice President JD Vance delivers the second keynote speech.

Historically, the party in power tends to lose congressional seats during midterms. This year, Democrats see a chance to capitalize on the political climate, pointing to inflation, high gas prices, and Trump’s negative ratings as factors. Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin has expressed confidence in regaining power, stating that their party focuses on issues like reducing costs and expanding affordable healthcare.

While some prominent Republicans are not attending the convention, Gruters noted that many candidates in competitive races will be present, recognizing the importance of conveying their message directly to voters.

The convention will highlight Trump’s policy achievements, including tax cuts, fair trade policies, and $19 trillion in investments. Gruters asserts that Trump delivered for the American worker, emphasizing his dedication to their issues.

Additionally, the RNC boasts a financial advantage over the DNC. Gruters mentioned that the GOP has been strategically saving and plans to use its funds effectively in the coming 60 days to drive voter turnout and communicate where candidates stand.
