Political Figures Face Scrutiny During 9/11 Commemorative Events

President Donald Trump, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez were criticized by some on Friday regarding their conduct during 9/11 memorial ceremonies. Critics accused them of behaving inappropriately during events to mark the anniversary.

Controversies at Ground Zero

During the service at Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan, Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez faced backlash after video footage appeared to show them smiling and laughing. This occurred as the names of those who perished in the attacks were read.

The footage, broadcast by Fox News, showed Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez seemingly smiling at each other. This clip was circulated by prominent Republicans who argued that such behavior was unfit for public service.

A Republican cited the clip, asking, “How the hell do you laugh while the names of those murdered on 9/11 are being read aloud? Why would you do so?”

Another commenter questioned, “Why are these two laughing?!” sharing the same footage.

As critics circulated the clip, a senior attendee described the footage as being misrepresented. Michael Ragusa, a former EMT with the New York City Fire Department, stated that the video simply showed a greeting between Ocasio-Cortez and Mamdani.

“AOC was standing in the back of the line, waiting for the proper moment to greet the mayor,” Ragusa explained. He pointed out that they were respectful, in contrast to others who were seen on their phones or talking as names were announced.

The ceremony gathered victims’ families, friends, and political leaders to honor those lost during the September 11 attacks.

Political Tensions at the Ceremony

Mamdani’s attendance had already been a matter of political debate. Some relatives urged the mayor to avoid these commemorations, though New York Governor Kathy Hochul defended his participation.

Despite the tension, Mamdani attended the event. Images showed him shaking hands with Rudy Giuliani, New York City’s mayor during the 2001 attacks.

The criticism follows ongoing disputes regarding Mamdani’s stance on terrorism-related issues and the city’s response to the attacks.

Trump’s Appearance at Pentagon Event

President Trump faced criticism over visuals from a 9/11 memorial event in Virginia. He attended the Pentagon’s 25th anniversary commemoration alongside the First Lady. During the ceremony, footage showed Trump with his eyes closed, leading some to claim he was asleep.

Trump’s detractors spread the images online, labeling his behavior as disrespectful to families of victims. Some defended him, countering that the footage did not prove that Trump had fallen asleep and noted his attendance at a political event the night before.

A White House spokesperson dismissed the sleep allegations, affirming Trump was listening and honoring the victims.

Trump’s attendance drew focus given his critique of former President Joe Biden concerning age and alertness, having called Biden “Sleepy Joe.”

Commemoration Events Stir Political Debate

The controversies displayed the political sensitivity surrounding the 25th anniversary of the attacks. Ground Zero remains focused on remembering victims, prohibiting political speeches there. Yet, at the Pentagon, Trump along with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth addressed attendees post-name readings.

Vice President JD Vance partook in the New York ceremony, completing attendance with the four living former presidents—Biden, Obama, Bush, and Clinton.

For many attending families, the emphasis stayed on honoring those deceased. The attacks involved the hijacking of four commercial aircrafts. Two planes hit New York’s World Trade Center, one went into the Pentagon, and a fourth went down in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after an attempt to regain control.

Even after twenty-five years, these ceremonies unite survivors, first responders, families, and leaders. However, they also highlight the challenges for political figures avoiding scrutiny over brief captured moments.
