Mississippi authorities have arrested Jarques Ratliff, a 51-year-old man, on a murder charge. This follows an official homicide ruling in the death of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old Black mother of four. Fortune was found hanging from a tree behind an abandoned home in Jackson last month.
The arrest comes after intense media attention and online discussions about the case. Fortune’s death stirred public interest, given Mississippi’s legacy of racial violence. Law enforcement confirmed that Ratliff, a Black resident of Jackson, had a prior connection with Fortune.

Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney announced Ratliff’s arrest at a news conference. Police officers took Ratliff into custody without incident while he was walking along Capitol Street in Jackson. This occurred shortly after officers executed search warrants at related properties.
Brackney emphasized the arrest as a key development but noted that the investigation remains active. Additional arrest warrants may be issued as detectives pursue more leads.
“We have a responsibility to ensure our public statements are backed by evidence and facts,” Chief Brackney said.
Public and Political Reaction
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other Democrats have urged the Department of Justice to investigate hanging deaths of Black Americans. Ocasio-Cortez described them as “racial terror” and “modern-day lynchings.”

Family members shared that Fortune had moved to Jackson from Kentucky a decade ago. She was working to start a cleaning business and stabilize her life before her death. Despite recent homelessness, her dedication remained strong.

Ratliff is held at Hinds County Detention Center. Mississippi State Defender André de Gruy stated Ratliff’s initial court appearance is expected by Monday, where charges will be read. Police have not detailed the specific evidence linking him to Fortune’s death or described their personal connection.
