Controversy Surrounds Ocasio-Cortez and Mamdani at 9/11 Memorial

President Donald Trump criticized Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani for their behavior at the 9/11 Memorial. Both were seen sharing a light moment during the reading of victims’ names, drawing criticism.

“I think it’s terrible,” said Trump regarding the video capturing the duo. “It’s not a place to be laughing, especially in that case.”

The video, showcasing Ocasio-Cortez and Mamdani smiling and appearing to laugh, stirred backlash online. It aired during the solemn ceremonies marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, which claimed nearly 3,000 lives.

Rep. Wesley Hunt of Texas expressed his disapproval on social media, writing, “As the names of Americans murdered on September 11th are read aloud at Ground Zero, AOC and Mamdani are laughing and smiling together.” He emphasized the importance of respecting the gravity of the moment.

Others, like Meghan McCain and New York City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov, shared similar sentiments, questioning the appropriateness of the interaction.

Zohran Mamdani was previously urged by victims’ families to stay away from the memorial. Despite collecting 110,000 signatures on a petition against his attendance, Mamdani decided to participate and stand alongside mourners.

Michael Ragusa, a former associate of Mayor Rudy Giuliani, disputed the claims of disrespect. According to Ragusa, he witnessed the pair simply exchanging greetings, not laughing at the ceremony itself.

While multiple politicians from both parties engaged in casual interactions during the event, exact details of the conversation between Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez remain unclear.
