Macklemore Removed from Ed Sheeran’s Tour over Political Stance

Macklemore has faced backlash during Ed Sheeran’s U.S. stadium tour for including political messages in his performances. His pro-Palestinian stance, showcased at several events such as MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, led to his exclusion from the tour.

During his performances on September 4 and 5, Macklemore wore a keffiyeh and displayed footage of Gaza’s destruction. He performed the song ‘Hind’s Hall’ and led the audience in chants of ‘Free Palestine,’ which created controversy. The lyrics of the song accuse Israel of genocide.

Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, banned Macklemore from playing at Gillette Stadium due to the rapper’s stage conduct. Kraft cited what he described as Macklemore’s ‘broader history of anti-Semitic rhetoric and imagery.’

Gillette Stadium has a longstanding commitment to providing a welcoming environment for all guests and ensuring that events held at our venue do not provide a platform for hate speech, Kraft stated. He emphasized that actions deemed offensive to the Jewish community had prompted the decision.

Macklemore was set to open for Sheeran on September 25 and 26. However, with Macklemore’s removal from the tour’s remaining U.S. dates, he will no longer perform. The decision followed multiple venues refusing his participation.

The controversy started with a 2014 performance in Seattle. Macklemore appeared in a costume some said resembled anti-Jewish caricatures. Civil rights groups, including the Anti-Defamation League, condemned the outfit. Macklemore denied any intentional offense.

His recent song, ‘Hind’s Hall,’ adds to critiques of Macklemore for condemning Israel without addressing the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023. Kraft, who established the Foundation to Combat Antisemitism, views Macklemore’s actions as harmful rhetoric. He has invited Macklemore to discuss the issue, emphasizing peace and an end to hate.

In a social media post, Macklemore held venue operators and Kraft accountable for barring him. While acknowledging Sheeran’s difficult position, he did not accept the characterization of his speech as hate-filled. He remains firm in his willingness to bear the consequences of his stance.
