Delaware Voters Conclude 2026 Primary Season

Delaware voters participate in the final primary for the 2026 election cycle on Tuesday. This season has witnessed significant wins for progressives and socialists, who have surpassed Democratic establishment opponents. President Donald Trump has maintained considerable influence in Republican contests, although there have been a few notable setbacks.

Democratic Senator Chris Coons and State Attorney General Kathy Jennings both face primary challengers. Meanwhile, Democratic Representative Sarah McBride is unopposed in her primary as they prepare for the general election. Republicans aim to disrupt the Democrats’ stronghold on Delaware’s statewide offices.

Progressive Victories and Setbacks

Delaware’s primaries mark the end of a season that has reshaped the Democratic Party. Progressive and Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) candidates have emerged victorious, ousting some seasoned incumbents. Last year, socialist New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s Democratic primary win shook the political landscape, bringing fresh attention to the far-left movement.

In June’s primaries, left-wing contenders defeated establishment rivals. DSA member Melat Kiros won over 15-term Democratic Representative Diana DeGette in Colorado. Darializa Avila Chevalier ousted five-term Democratic Representative Adriano Espaillat in New York. These victories extended to important Senate primaries in August, with Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan in Minnesota, and state Rep. Angie Nixon in Florida achieving success.

Progressives faced setbacks, including Francesca Hong’s defeat in the Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial primary. Despite this, the left has reinforced its position in steering the party’s ideological direction. Many victorious candidates campaigned on abolishing ICE, reducing military aid to Israel, and promoting a single-payer “Medicare for All” system.

“Progressives have demonstrated they possess the coalition and message to challenge the status quo,” stated Democratic strategist Joe Caiazzo, a veteran of progressive champion Bernie Sanders’ campaigns.

Republican Endorsements and Influence

Within the Republican Party, President Trump’s social media boasts emphasize the strength of his endorsements. His influence in GOP primaries remains robust, displaying a perfect record in Senate primaries and near perfection in House Republican contests.

Trump’s influence has reshaped the GOP, giving rise to populist MAGA and America First factions over traditional conservatives. Despite this, some of his gubernatorial endorsements did not succeed. Notable losses include candidates in Georgia, South Carolina, Iowa, Wyoming, and Minnesota.

“While a Trump endorsement boosts candidates in Republican primaries, it doesn’t guarantee victory,” explained GOP strategist Ryan Williams.

Williams added that Trump’s influence persists even when his endorsements don’t result in wins. Fundamental issues within a candidacy may sometimes outweigh the benefits of an endorsement.

Delaware’s Conclusion to Primary Season

The primary season, which began on March 3 in states like Texas, North Carolina, and Arkansas, ends with Delaware. Democratic Senator Chris Coons seeks a third Senate term. He faces challenges from Jeff Appelhans, Mary Louve, and Eric Hansen, a Republican-turned-Democrat. Former state Senator Michael Katz and U.S. Army Reserves Col. John Shulli compete for the Republican nomination.

Representative Sarah McBride remains unchallenged in the Democratic primary for her second term as a statewide House member. Republicans Joseph Arminio, Earl Cooper, and John Whalen seek the GOP nomination. State Attorney General Kathy Jennings competes against Dwayne Bensing and Patty Rickman for the Democratic nomination. David Graham is unopposed in the GOP race.
