California Flats is a vast 2,900-acre area in central California, filled with solar panels. The abundant solar energy generated here is directly fed into batteries located on-site. This innovative approach is part of the California Flats Solar-plus-Storage Project, supported by Hearst Corporation.
Renewable energy companies have struggled for years with the challenge of storing the significant energy they produce for later use. The evolving solution seems to be batteries. In California, there’s now considerable grid-scale battery storage capable of powering millions of homes for several hours. On most days, battery power is the second-largest energy source in the state.
Given this context, the technology surrounding batteries is rapidly advancing, prompting a deeper evaluation. Cooper Katz McKim, a producer for The Indicator from Planet Money, explores this topic in a three-part series dedicated to battery technology.
