Colin Kaepernick’s NFL Comparison Sparks Debate

Colin Kaepernick restated his comparison between the NFL and the slave trade in a conversation with Ryan Clark, a former ESPN commentator. This discussion followed Kaepernick’s comments in the 2021 Netflix series Colin in Black & White, where he depicted the NFL Scouting Combine as resembling a slave auction.

During the series, Kaepernick narrates, “What they don’t want you to understand is what’s being established is a power dynamic.” He describes how teams examine players thoroughly before putting them on the field, leaving no dignity intact.

During a 2026 event at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City, Kaepernick continued to highlight this narrative. In an interview on Clark’s “Pivot” podcast, Kaepernick explained the moment his perspective shifted, saying, “You get to the point, where it’s like, ‘Strip down to your drawers.’ It feels like a meat market.” He admitted he lacked the “historical perspective” in 2011, but now identifies a “parallel” with slave auctions.

Kaepernick acknowledges the millions paid to NFL players but argues the process shares similarities with slavery in terms of approach and intentions.

Kaepernick’s remarks have sparked varied reactions in sports media. His comments during an event with Jemele Hill in Detroit, where they discussed his past and aspirations, further illustrate his complex relationship with the NFL. Hill even suggested the Atlanta Falcons consider signing him, highlighting his desire to return to the league.

Kaepernick has not played in the NFL since January 2017, yet he maintains he is “ready” to rejoin, emphasizing his consistent training as an NFL starting quarterback.
