Introduction
The Gary/Chicago International Airport is taking significant steps to improve air traffic control capabilities with the construction of a new tower. This comes after the airport expanded its runway 11 years ago, underscoring the need for better visibility and control.
A New Era in Air Traffic Control
The airport’s Executive Director, Dan Vicari, highlighted the limitations of the current 50-foot tower, which struggles to provide accurate visibility for jets on the extended runway. The new tower will be 100 feet tall, enhancing visual monitoring for controllers. Ground-breaking occurred on September 18, 2026, with opening expected in 22 months.
Funding and Construction
“It’s really just about making it higher,” stated Vicari.
The project reflects years of planning and funding efforts. Initially, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved a $1.7 million grant in 2024 for design and engineering. Out of 80 airports, only 20 received approval. Recently, a $10 million FAA grant was allocated for construction, followed by another $8.3 million last month. A $16 million contract has been awarded to Larson-Danielson Construction to build the tower.
Benefits of the New Tower
Vicari emphasized the new tower’s role in supporting aviation growth, enhancing safety, and boosting operational efficiency. It will solidify the airport’s position as a vital economic asset for Northwest Indiana and the Chicago region.
Vanessa Allen-McCloud of the airport authority noted the project’s long-term impact, stating, “This is the result of years of planning and partnerships across various administrations and government levels. It represents significant investments in our region.”
Additional Developments
The airport recently opened a new $24 million, 55-acre air cargo campus. It is currently utilized by UPS, with FedEx planning to establish a $60 million distribution center north of the airport.
Enhanced Facilities
The upcoming tower will include conference rooms, offices, restrooms, a break room, and a mechanical room, none of which exist in the current tower. Vicari mentioned the existing tower will be demolished upon the new tower’s completion.
