Pittsburgh Doctor Tragically Killed in Home Invasion

A pediatric doctor from Pittsburgh was killed, and his wife critically injured in a home invasion attack. The police reported that Dr. Idris Evans, 46, of Edgewood, Pennsylvania, was fatally stabbed early Thursday morning. His wife is in critical yet stable condition.

Emergency services received a 9-1-1 call regarding the stabbing at 12:31 a.m. on Linden Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered the couple had suffered multiple stab wounds.

According to the Allegheny County Police Department, Dr. Evans was transported to a nearby hospital, where medical staff pronounced him dead. His wife also received medical treatment.

The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway from Pittsburgh, allegedly entered the home and attacked the couple while they slept. Evans’ wife reported that the attacker was wearing only underwear and claimed to be God, court documents obtained by KDKA revealed.

Dr. Evans’ wife managed to alert their 8 and 12-year-old children, instructing them to flee to a neighbor’s home. She also referred to the attacker as “Elijah,” suggesting a possible prior acquaintance, although this remains unconfirmed by police.

Law enforcement, with assistance from a K-9 unit, located Hemingway hiding behind a nearby residence. He was found with cuts on his hand and remains hospitalized pending transfer to the Allegheny County Jail. Hemingway is facing several charges, including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, and trespassing.

The motive for the attack is still under investigation, and it remains unknown if Evans and Hemingway had any previous relationship.

Dr. Evans served as the medical director for the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and was an assistant professor of critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

A spokesperson for UPMC expressed profound sadness at Dr. Evans’ passing, describing him as a dedicated caregiver and valued community member. The hospital and university communities are mourning his loss and extend their condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
