Antonio Banks: A Player Focused Beyond Individuality

Marian Catholic’s Antonio Banks shines as a dynamic running back and defensive back, continually striving for excellence. He remains unsatisfied with personal achievements and instead focuses on the team’s success. “Just thinking about my team more than myself,” Banks shares. His dedication is evident as he aims to push his fellow seniors to reach uncharted territories like playoffs and larger stages. For Banks, it’s bigger than himself.

Record-Breaking Performance Amid Challenges

In a recent game against St. Viator, Banks contributed significantly, catching 13 passes for 226 yards and scoring two touchdowns. Despite his efforts, Marian Catholic couldn’t overcome their slow start, losing 30-21 in a Catholic League Red match. Banks also had 46 yards rushing on 13 carries. Freshman quarterback Caleb Wilson completed 21 of 36 passes for 303 yards and three touchdowns.

Banks’ 226 receiving yards and Wilson’s 303 passing yards broke single-game records for the Spartans. Wilson often relied on Banks for support. “It’s really easy to play with him,” Wilson comments. “When nothing’s open, I’ll see No. 6’s hands in the air and just dump it off to him.” Wilson recognizes the seamless connection they share.

Spectacular Plays and Influence on Team Efforts

St. Viator’s Jax Baker led their performance with two touchdown catches. Initially trailing 16-0, Marian Catholic faced a 23-7 deficit nearing halftime. Amid adversity, Wilson launched a deep pass to Banks, who capitalized with a 70-yard touchdown catch, reducing the margin to 23-15 after a successful two-point conversion.

Banks comments, “I saw my quarterback rolling out. I saw open space and ran to it.” Banks also scored on a 55-yard touchdown catch and performed multiple tackles on defense. His contributions resonate well with Marian Catholic coach Nick Lopez, “Tony’s been pouring everything out on the field. It’s great to watch. His energy is feeding into his teammates.”

Upcoming Opportunities and Personal Journey

Banks and the Spartans face a demanding schedule, including challenging matches against Nazareth and Providence. “I’ve been thinking to myself about how it’s just a big chance to put my teammates on a bigger platform and show people what we can do,” Banks asserts.

Banks’ love for football traces back to seventh grade. Inspired by watching a neighboring football team, he instantly embraced the sport. “My first time out there, the first time they threw the ball to me, I went 90 yards,” Banks recalls, identifying his calling instantly. His journey and contributions continue to inspire his teammates and coaches.
