The International team faced tough odds at Illinois’ Medinah Country Club during the Presidents Cup, despite starting Sunday with a lead of 10.5-7.5 over the U.S. team. This did not result in a repeat of Europe’s comeback at the Ryder Cup 14 years ago. By the end of the day, the U.S. team emerged victorious, securing a 17-13 win, and was awarded the trophy by Honorary Chairman President Donald J. Trump.
U.S. captain Brandt Snedeker, who experienced defeat at Medinah in 2012, highlighted the team’s unwavering spirit. “I think these guys never lost faith,” Snedeker stated, making reference to the peculiar occurrences historically associated with Medinah.
The competition began with Cameron Young defeating Ryo Hisatsune, 3 and 2. Justin Thomas delivered a strong performance, winning against Corey Conners, 5 and 3. The Internationals countered with Tom Kim besting Wyndham Clark, 3 and 2, marking Kim as the first International player to score 4 points since 2015.
Following Tom Kim’s victory, Scottie Scheffler beat Nico Echavarria, 2 and 1. Sungjae Im secured a win over Sam Burns, 3 and 1, maintaining a lead for the International team. However, the U.S. team rallied, earning 4 consecutive points to gain a 14.5-12.5 lead. Chris Gotterup defeated Christiaan Bezuidenhout, 1 up, while Patrick Cantlay beat Adam Scott, 2 and 1, Collin Morikawa overcame Hideki Matsuyama, 1 up, and Jackson Koivun achieved an impressive comeback, defeating Si Woo Kim, 2 up.
Snedeker commended Koivun’s performance, noting, “I put him in a really tough spot out there. We thought he could handle it. Sure enough, he did.” The decisive point came with Jacob Bridgeman’s win, 1 up over Min Woo Lee, securing the U.S. team’s 11th consecutive Presidents Cup.
Xander Schauffele then triumphed over Ryan Fox, 2 and 1, while Nick Taylor and Russell Henley ended their match in a tie. This consolidated the American victory, resulting in a 17-13 score, bringing their all-time record to 14-1-1.
Reflecting on his strategic choices, Snedeker remarked, “When those pairings came out last night, it was the first time I got them right all week.” Despite the International team’s lead on Friday and Saturday, they must wait until 2028 for another opportunity to challenge the Americans. The next Cup will take place in Australia at Kingston Heath Golf Club.
International captain Geoff Ogilvy spoke about the challenges faced by his team, stating, “It’s a tough thing to do to win singles in the U.S.” Expressing both optimism and realism, he noted the excitement of the team at the start but acknowledged the difficulty as the day progressed.
