Chris Simms Faces Backlash Over Halftime Comments

On Saturday night, NBC’s Chris Simms faced widespread criticism on social media for comments he made during halftime of the Oregon-USC game. Simms attributed the responsibility for a severe hit, which hospitalized Ducks quarterback Dante Moore, to Moore himself.

Simms commented, “It was a Debbie Downer moment. I guess you have to have a soft spot in your heart for defenders right now. Dante Moore is 6-3, 240 pounds, he’s running at you. The defender Stephens is bracing himself, getting ready to get low to make the tackle.”

Simms continued, “Yes, defenders need to be cautious with quarterbacks. But I’ll also say, Dante Moore slid very late, placing the defender in a no-win situation.”

The reaction from fans was swift, with many flooding Simms’ social media mentions. By Sunday, Simms issued an apology, acknowledging his insensitive handling of the situation.

In his apology, Simms stated, “I want to apologize for how I handled halftime between the Oregon Ducks and USC Trojans. I clearly did not show enough sympathy for the situation, diving right into football stuff. I am sorry for that. I love college football.”

Simms added, “I apologize to all college football fans, particularly Oregon Duck fans. I respect the Oregon Ducks and Dante Moore, who is one of my favorite players in all of college football.”

Simms expressed respect for Oregon’s coach Dan Lanning and the organization. Reflecting on his own experience, he said, “I have tremendous sympathy for the situation as someone who nearly died on the field from a hard hit 20 years ago. I understand the game’s brutality and the need to protect each other on the football field.”

Despite the apology, some fans remain skeptical, suggesting Simms is apologizing only due to the backlash. Yet, he acknowledged his comments were inappropriate and demonstrated his recognition of being in the wrong.
