El Niño and Its Impact on Weather
Weather experts are forecasting a significant El Niño event, anticipated to bolster flood risk in multiple regions across the United States over the coming months. This climate phenomenon is characterized by warmer Pacific waters, impacting global temperatures and rainfall patterns.
The ongoing El Niño is expected to strengthen and could reach historic levels between October and December according to federal forecasts.
Regions at Increased Risk
California and the southern U.S. are likely to experience the most pronounced increase in flood risk, particularly during the winter months. Heather Zons from The Weather Channel highlights the Southwest and South Florida regions as zones of concern from January to March.
Arizona and New Mexico are especially vulnerable due to their geographic features like mountains and canyons, which can quickly direct water into populated areas. Zons warns of the potential for flash floods overwhelming dry washes, affecting communities and infrastructure.
South Florida faces its own challenges. Increased urbanization means less soil available to absorb rainfall, raising the risk of nuisance flooding.
Expert Insights on Weather Patterns
Fox Weather experts Ian Oliver and Greg Diamond echo concerns for California and the southern U.S., noting that an intensified southern jet stream could lead to more storm systems, bringing increased rainfall and thunderstorms. They suggest that the Southeast, including the Carolinas and Florida, remains at risk, with adverse weather conditions emerging in fall and peaking in winter.
Jane Minar, another meteorologist, identifies heightened flooding risk for California and Gulf Coast states during an El Niño winter. January and February might introduce wetter weather patterns in these regions, further enhancing flood potential.
Additional Areas of Concern
Zons also advises monitoring the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley areas. Previous heavy rainfall periods in these regions suggest milder El Niño could shift winter precipitation from snow to rain, increasing flood risks.
