Calm Amidst Crisis: Finnish President Stubb on Europe’s Security

During the U.N. General Assembly in New York, Finnish President Alexander Stubb expressed a calm perspective on the ongoing conflict involving Russia and Ukraine. While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Russia’s actions might extend beyond Ukraine, Stubb assured that Finland is prepared for Moscow’s challenges. He attributed some progress to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s intensified efforts for peace, citing the involvement of negotiators such as Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

Finland’s Military Readiness
Finland has prepared itself extensively for potential threats. The country recently enhanced its military strength by acquiring 64 F-35A fighter jets to replace its F/A-18 Hornet fleet. These additions follow a long-standing commitment to maintaining a robust military force, including 280,000 personnel ready to mobilize if necessary. Finland also houses an extensive network of civilian shelters that can accommodate over four million people.

Stubb explained Finland’s stance with a mix of resilience and composure, historically leaning into strategic defense measures since joining NATO in 2023. With its military readiness and NATO membership, Finland serves as a robust deterrent against potential Russian aggression.
