Attorney for Michael Desronvil Discusses Jury Decision in Lindsay Clancy Trial

The attorney representing Michael P. Desronvil, the lone juror who held out in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial, insists his client was certain of his decision. In an interview with Fox News aired recently, Edward Paltzik disputed claims that Desronvil had reasonable doubt during deliberations.

“Michael had zero doubt. No doubt,” Paltzik stated. He mentioned a substantial amount of evidence, adding, “A mountain of evidence,” when asked to support his position.

Lindsay Clancy admitted to murdering her three children, aged 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan, in January 2023. Charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder, her defense argued she was suffering from postpartum psychosis, potentially excusing her from criminal liability.

The jury, after significant testimony and prolonged deliberations, was unable to reach a unanimous verdict. Consequently, Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial. This case has amplified discussions encompassing postpartum psychosis, women’s mental health, and the treatment of mental illness within the justice system.

Who Is Michael Desronvil?

Michael Desronvil, a 48-year-old resident from Massachusetts, stood as the sole holdout juror in the trial. His identity, revealed earlier this month, attracted public attention following the mistrial. Fellow jurors criticized his deliberation approach, asserting that Desronvil did not adequately consider their viewpoints.

Jury foreperson Roni Carlson shared with NBC10 Boston that Desronvil acknowledged a point of reasonable doubt yet refused to conclude that Clancy was not criminally responsible. Juror Paula Devlin highlighted Desronvil’s perceived arrogance and shared how jurors revisited medical and toxicology evidence to address his concerns. Through Newsweek, Desronvil stated, “I didn’t have any doubts. As I tried to explain different possible theories during deliberation, I kept getting cut off as if I had doubts based on the evidence present.”

Desronvil faces public scrutiny due to his involvement in this high-profile case. His attorney noted that he is “presently safe and sound at an undisclosed secure location in a rural area of Northern New England.” A fundraiser supporting Desronvil accrued more than $350,000.

Court documents reveal that Desronvil faced a criminal charge over an alleged assault on his then-wife in September 2021. With a plea of not guilty, the charges were subsequently dismissed in December 2021, indicating no conviction.

What Happens Next in Lindsay Clancy Case?

The mistrial leaves Clancy’s case unresolved, maintaining pending charges against her. A status hearing is scheduled in Plymouth Superior Court before Judge Sullivan on September 29. Clancy’s lawyer, Kevin Reddington, renewed a motion for a not guilty verdict from Sullivan, intending to present arguments that exclude another prosecution on double-jeopardy grounds.

Clancy stays under custody, currently receiving psychiatric care at Tewksbury State Hospital in Massachusetts.
