Exploring Architecture Passion: Marie Olmos’s Journey with Frank Lloyd Wright Trust

Marie Olmos’s enduring love for architecture traces back to her upbringing in Belgium and has followed her through her move to Chicago. Her European education involved museum visits, enriching her appreciation for architectural wonders. In Chicago, Olmos found the city’s architectural scene captivating, driving her to volunteer at historical buildings worldwide. She has joined about 20 new volunteers as interpreters at Frank Lloyd Wright’s home and studio in Oak Park under the Wright Trust.

On a recent Thursday, volunteers gathered for a two-hour session learning techniques and diving into Wright’s design heritage in Oak Park. Olmos expressed her eagerness to learn more after this initial session. Her volunteer journey became a meaningful pursuit following her husband’s death, rekindling her architectural passion.

The volunteer training includes three sessions and other criteria before leading tours. Certification takes approximately eight weeks, according to Connor Jansen, the volunteer resources administrator. Since volunteers began conducting tours in 1974, Jansen, who started training volunteers four years ago, notes the diverse backgrounds of both trainees and guests.

“Visitors and volunteers come from various professions, including architecture and interior design. Everybody shares a common curiosity,” Jansen explained. Besides Oak Park, Jansen coordinates volunteer efforts at Wright’s Frederick C. Robie House in Hyde Park.

Sean Pittacora, another volunteer and recent Oak Park resident, has long cherished architecture, influenced by his great-grandmother’s home designed by R. Harold Zook. Admiring Wright’s creations motivates Pittacora to engage visitors with his architectural enthusiasm.

Sharing his anticipation, Pittacora stated, “I look forward to discussing my architectural passion with Oak Park visitors, highlighting our unique village.”
