Singer-Songwriter Duncan Sheik Passes Away at 56

Duncan Sheik, widely known for his song “Barely Breathing” and his contributions to the musical “Spring Awakening,” has died at 56. He passed away on Thursday due to organ failure, as confirmed by his mother, Suzanne Sheik, to The New York Times. Attempts to reach his representatives for comment were unsuccessful.

A statement on Sheik’s social media acknowledged his death, expressing profound sadness and describing him as a talented musician and loving family member. It emphasized the loss felt by his friends and family.

Earlier, an update on Sheik’s health was shared on Instagram, noting that he was in critical but stable condition. The family requested privacy, promising to provide updates when appropriate.

The announcement came before the Off-Broadway debut of Sheik’s latest musical, “Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen,” and a new staging of “Spring Awakening.”

Throughout the summer of 2026, Sheik frequently posted hospital photos on Instagram, though he kept his medical issues private. His 1996 hit, “Barely Breathing,” remained on the Billboard Hot 100 for 55 weeks and was rediscovered through TV shows like “Glee.” The song earned him a Grammy nomination for best male pop vocal performance in 1998.

Sheik’s career evolved with Broadway projects such as “Spring Awakening,” which was based on a play by Frank Wedekind. The production, with music by Sheik and lyrics by Steven Sater, won eight Tony Awards and a Grammy for its album. It also helped advance the careers of actors like Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele.

He later worked on “American Psycho” and other projects, including “Whisper House” and “Claptrap.” Born in Montclair, New Jersey, in 1969, Sheik spent his early years between New Jersey and South Carolina, developing his musical skills from an early age.

Sheik is survived by his wife, Nora Ariffin, and their daughter, Ines. His legacy includes both his musical achievements and his impact on those who knew him.
