Seattle Mariners manager Dan Wilson announced Sunday that he will not return for the 2027 season. Before Game 162 against the Los Angeles Angels, Wilson held a private meeting to inform players and staff. After the game, he addressed the media himself, a rare move in modern sports.
Traditionally, MLB protocol dictates that front-office executives handle such announcements, either through press releases or solo news conferences, without the manager present. Wilson, a former Mariners catcher who became manager in August 2024, took a different approach.
“This season has been very difficult, and the results have not met expectations,” Wilson stated. “As a result, today marks my last day as manager of the Seattle Mariners.”
Wilson acknowledged his deep connection with the organization. He conveyed the personal difficulty of the decision, expressing gratitude for the opportunities provided since he joined as a player in 1994.
The Mariners entered the 2026 season with high hopes, following their 2025 AL West title and a near World Series appearance. However, the team finished third at 76-86 due to offensive struggles, inconsistent pitching, bullpen issues, and poor defensive metrics. Comments from players indicated a lack of accountability as a significant problem.
Wilson responded to criticisms about leadership and accountability:
“Accountability is crucial, and it manifests in various ways. Reflecting on the season, it’s evident that it may have been lacking,” he remarked.
Regarding the decision-making, Wilson accepted the reality of sports management:
“I’ve been in baseball a long time, and this is part of the role. Managers take responsibility and the blame. It’s challenging, but this is what happens.”
Mariners President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto and General Manager Justin Hollander will continue in their roles in 2027, acknowledging a collective failure to meet expectations and the necessity of a leadership change.
Wilson concludes his stint as manager with a 187-171 record.
