Los Angeles Chargers Struggle with Winless Start; Herbert Faces Criticism

The Los Angeles Chargers are currently facing significant challenges in the NFL, remaining winless after three weeks of the season. Their losses, including two decisive defeats against the Arizona Cardinals and the Las Vegas Raiders, showcase struggles against teams that managed a total of just six wins last year. However, their recent clash with the Buffalo Bills may have been the most disappointing yet.

Despite the Chargers’ strong defensive effort, forcing five turnovers, victory remained elusive as they lost 24-16. Offensive inefficiency plagued the team, with quarterback Justin Herbert struggling to convert drives into touchdowns. Leading 13-10 in the fourth quarter, the team resorted to field goals, allowing Buffalo a comeback opportunity.

Buffalo’s quarterback Josh Allen overcame initial difficulties, orchestrating two scoring drives in the fourth quarter to secure the win. Meanwhile, Herbert’s performance attracted criticism, appearing less effective and decisive than the franchise quarterback he is expected to be.

Chargers’ head coach Jim Harbaugh did not hesitate to address Herbert’s shaky performance post-game, urging improvement in decision-making. “Be better. Be better,” Harbaugh emphasized, highlighting the need for growth across the board.

Herbert was the sixth overall pick in the 2020 draft, rapidly gaining recognition as a standout quarterback. Recording impressive achievements as a rookie and during his second year with 5,014 passing yards and 38 touchdowns, Herbert set high expectations. However, reaching similar heights remains a challenge, with his postseason achievements falling short of expectations.

During last season, Herbert earned a Pro Bowl selection, throwing for 3,727 yards and accumulating 498 rushing yards. Yet this season, sluggish performance continues with 627 passing yards, three touchdowns, four interceptions, and a concerning 59.1% completion rate.

The road ahead for the Chargers is daunting, with pending matchups against teams such as the Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, and others. The pressure is on for Herbert to reverse his fortunes, as doubts persist.
