David Cerda Celebrates 25 Years of Stage Camp with ‘Joan Crawford Goes to Hell’

David Cerda is widely recognized in Chicago for his distinctive stage camp style, while proudly wearing his status as a 1979 Hammond High School graduate. In 2026, he marks the 25th anniversary of his Hell in a Handbag production company, highlighting his admiration for Joan Crawford.

After the September 25, 2026, performance of ‘Joan Crawford Goes to Hell,’ Cerda, embodying Joan Crawford, welcomed guests alongside his terrier Walter, who features in the parody. The production, running until October 4, 2026, was originally staged in 1999 under Sweetback Productions and revived by Cerda with three actors portraying Crawford.

In previews from August 21, the play extends through its closing on October 4. Cerda, who penned the script, portrays Crawford facing her mortality and descending to hell, encountering Satan portrayed by Nick Dorado. Alongside Christina, played by TJ O’Brien, Crawford undergoes key moments of her life.

Cerda describes the plot as a mix of ‘Mommie Dearest,’ part biography, and Crawford’s own book ‘My Way of Life,’ performed by three different versions of Joan. Directed by Cheryl Snodgrass, the cast includes Gretchen Greear, Nicholas Ian, Ryan Kenny, Haley Gillman, Lori Lee, and Michael Rashid.
