Tragic Incident Impacts NHL Player Kuzmenko
Andrei Kuzmenko of the Pittsburgh Penguins recently returned to his team following his father’s death in a bear attack in Siberia. Kuzmenko intends to remember his father by changing his jersey number.
Speaking at the team’s practice site before a game against the Montreal Canadiens, Kuzmenko addressed the media about his father’s fatal fishing trip. “My father went fishing with friends,” he said. “A bear attacked him while he was in the water. He fought the bear for an hour and ten minutes and survived for two more days,” he detailed.
Jersey Number Change with Deep Meaning
Kuzmenko, who previously wore No. 96, has decided to wear No. 62, honoring his late father who was 62 years old when he died. Additionally, his mother was born in 1962. Kuzmenko had planned to wear No. 10 with the Penguins; however, he altered his decision for personal reasons.
Kuzmenko, who played in the KHL before joining the NHL in the 2022-23 season, has participated in 271 games, accumulating 182 points. He expressed gratitude for the support he received after the tragic event.
