Keurig Dr Pepper Introduces Eco-Friendly Coffee Pods to Cut Waste

48 minutes ago 0

Coffee-pod manufacturers have long sought designs that are environmentally friendly. Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP) has unveiled a new product called AltaRounds, aimed at reducing waste. These pods feature compressed coffee enveloped in seaweed-derived coating sourced from France. Each puck-shaped capsule comes in packs of eight, priced at $1.37 each, similar to traditional K-Cups.

Monique Oxender, KDP’s chief sustainability officer, encourages users to dispose of AltaRounds like regular coffee grounds. They’re ideal for compost, whether on a garden or house plants. Other companies have attempted recycling coffee pods, though small plastic pieces present challenges for standard recyclers. In 2024, the US Securities and Exchange Commission penalized KDP for misleading statements about pod recyclability. Top recyclers refused KDP packaging, leading to a $1.5 million penalty.

Waste from coffee packaging is increasing. Earth911 reports nearly 40,000 coffee pods produced every minute; more than 20 billion are discarded globally each year. The coffee pods market was valued at $40.5 billion in 2024, with projections reaching $58.2 billion by 2030.

Some companies offer compostable pods, but concerns persist over their complete breakdown and composting infrastructure limitations. A UK regulator recently blocked two coffee companies from claiming their products were compostable without industrial facilities, a scarce option in the US.

James Sternberg from Clemson University cites infrastructure and economic challenges as hindrances to recycling and composting efforts. Still, AltaRounds can compost at home, disintegrating 12-16 weeks and fully biodegrading within 6 months.

Using AltaRounds requires a new coffee machine. The Keurig Alta, priced at $499.99, paired with four boxes of AltaRounds and glassware, offers retail value of $650, while KDP’s popular K-Cup brewer costs $219.99.

AltaRounds are available in six varieties: single shot medium roast espresso, double shot dark roast espresso, and flavored coffees. KDP licenses the alginate coating technology from Switzerland’s Delica’s CoffeeB system, which similarly reduces plastic waste.

KDP plans to maintain its K-Cup availability with the Alta machine. Oxender emphasizes consumer influence in product transition, relying on consumer guidance throughout each step.
