Danny Moscoso’s Game-Winning Field Goal Secures Victory for South Elgin

49 minutes ago 0

Senior kicker Danny Moscoso found himself in a high-pressure situation for South Elgin High School. Although usually playing as the goalkeeper for the Storm’s boys’ soccer team, he had decided to apply his skills to the football field over the summer.

Moscoso had faced many tense moments in soccer. Reflecting on a new challenge, he stated, ‘In this sport, no, but in soccer, yes. Last year, I was under a lot of pressure. I’m used to pressure.’

On Friday, Moscoso experienced a different kind of pressure as he prepared for a crucial field goal attempt against West Aurora. With the Upstate Eight West title within reach, he successfully converted a 32-yard kick with four seconds left, securing a 29-27 victory for South Elgin.

This field goal was Moscoso’s first in a game. Meanwhile, his teammates excelled as well. Quarterbacks Oliver Johnston and Carter McDonald each threw touchdown passes, while Lamari Smith rushed for 158 yards and a touchdown. Diesel Fecarotta’s blocked punt turned touchdown further boosted the team’s performance. Semaj Collier caught nine passes for 100 yards and a touchdown.

West Aurora’s Tyler Fecht, with only five passed completions, managed two touchdown passes and also received an 11-yard touchdown pass from Richard Bell Jr. Michael Williams contributed 81 rushing yards and a touchdown.

South Elgin faced three choices at the end of the game. They could aim for a touchdown, have regular kicker Jeffrey Espana try a field goal, or rely on Moscoso for the crucial kick. Head coach Pat Pistorio praised Moscoso’s long-distance kick skills and competitive nature, both in soccer and football. ‘He had that look in his eyes and he reassured me that he’s got it, so I trusted him,’ Pistorio commented.

Having lost a two-touchdown lead, South Elgin leveled the game with just over a minute left in the fourth quarter. McDonald’s 23-yard TD pass to Collier couldn’t secure a win with the two-point conversion. However, recovering an onside kick placed them back in the race. A fourth-and-seven situation from the Blackhawks’ 16-yard line put Moscoso back in focus. McDonald, switching quickly from quarterback to holder, faced a high snap. ‘I just had to get it down for the team,’ McDonald noted.

Moscoso’s football journey began with preparation at a July camp. ‘You just have to be ready at all times,’ he explained, hoping for a chance to prove himself. His game-winning kick validated all the practice and dedication he put into this new role.

After converting the field goal, Moscoso received immense support from his teammates. ‘They were grateful I had this opportunity and I made this game-winning kick,’ Moscoso shared.

With one game remaining against Elgin, South Elgin inches closer to claiming the conference title. Coach Pistorio expressed enthusiasm about the team’s performance and future growth. ‘This is why we do this,’ he said.
