Israel has strongly criticized the British Green Party’s statement that labels Zionism as a form of racism. The Foreign Ministry of Israel described the resolution as a “stain on the history of the United Kingdom” and urged British political leaders to “unequivocally reject this twisted resolution.”
The Green Party’s Motion
At its conference in Brighton, the Green Party of England and Wales supported a motion concerning Zionism. The party describes Zionism as an ideology that supports “an ethnonationalist Jewish state.” It also advocates for a “single democratic Palestinian state in all of historic Palestine.”
The real, material manifestation of Zionism has been the historic and ongoing dehumanization, displacement, dispossession, disenfranchisement, and destruction of Palestinians.
The motion passed with 1,022 votes in favor and 813 against, revealing the party’s internal division on this issue.
Israel’s Reaction
Responding on social media platform X, Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs claimed the Green Party had “ceased to act as a political party” and now serves as “a body that gives legitimacy to terrorism.”
The ministry stated that “The Greens have adopted not only the green of Hamas, but also its ideology: the elimination of the State of Israel through armed struggle.” The resolution, according to Israel, legitimizes armed struggle and calls for a Palestinian state “from the river to the sea,” implying the destruction of Israel. It also labels the Jewish aspiration for self-determination as “racist.”
The statement emphasized that “this goes far beyond the boundaries of legitimate political debate.” It also called for every political party in Britain, especially the governing Labour Party, to “unequivocally reject this twisted resolution.”
