Reports of escalating leaks and tense interactions between President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suggested a deteriorating relationship over Iran. However, a leading defense analyst revealed this was a strategic effort to keep Tehran uncertain. This stance projected American diplomatic patience while excluding Jerusalem, forming a covertly unified front.
Kobi Michael, a senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) and the Misgav Institute, suggested that the strategy concluded in a synchronized phase over the weekend. Trump and Netanyahu demonstrated a cohesive position by Sunday.
“Neither President Trump nor Prime Minister Netanyahu has any interest in any crisis, but by leaking the story of a crisis between Trump and Netanyahu, the Iranians might be surprised by the timing of the next military attack,” Michael commented. “The leak created a sense of disagreement between the two leaders.”
Axios reported Thursday on a challenging call between the leaders discussing a revised U.S. proposal sent to Iran through Pakistan. Netanyahu reportedly rejected this in favor of military actions aimed at Iran’s infrastructure.
U.S. sources described Netanyahu as extremely agitated following the exchange. Further reports suggested Israeli leaders felt marginalized from U.S.-Iran negotiations after Netanyahu’s plans for a joint campaign to dismantle the Iranian regime did not materialize.
Netanyahu spoke out Sunday, posting on social media to declare full solidarity with the White House and present a unified front. He emphasized, “The partnership between us and our two countries has been proven on the battlefield and has never been stronger.” He affirmed his and Trump’s unwavering policy against Iran developing nuclear weapons.
Michael interpreted public friction and strategic leaks as a deliberate ruse to catch Tehran off guard. This maneuver portrayed Trump as a leader favoring diplomatic efforts despite Netanyahu’s pressure.
The final alignment followed a weekend call where Trump assured Netanyahu that any agreement with Iran would dismantle Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. Netanyahu also expressed gratitude for Trump’s commitment to Israel’s security, reinforcing Israel’s right to self-defense.
Israel continues to receive updates from Washington on negotiations regarding a memorandum to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resolve outstanding issues. Following Sunday’s conversation, Netanyahu thanked Trump for his exceptional commitment to Israeli security.
Michael noted the public remarks post-discussion reflect strategic coordination with the U.S. In Jerusalem, skepticism persists on whether U.S.-Iran differences will resolve or whether Trump will align with the Iranian stance.
